SportWorks successfully received funding from Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner to deliver activities in the heart of Newcastle through the Operation Payback Fund.

The diversionary programme runs for 26 weeks on a Wednesday evening at the Swans Recreation Ground, Newcastle, in partnership with Newcastle East End FC.  A comprehensive multi-activity programme has been designed by the young people and delivered at times known for high levels of anti-social behaviour and low-level crime and disorder. Activities on offer range from football, boot camps, dance, basketball, fitness and youth work. The indoor community room and outdoor MUGA/grass pitches are be used which makes the sessions informal and relaxed.

On a recent visit to the session, Kim McGuinness, NPCC, said: “When I launched Operation Payback, I said we would take the money seized from criminals and reinvest it into the communities they tried to exploit. We are doing just that with SportWorks and Newcastle East End FC.

By providing a safe and enjoyable alternative, in the heart of the community, we can steer people away from anti-social behaviour and low-level crime & disorder.

Through sessions like this, we aren’t just providing a football session, we are fostering positive relationships, providing information & advice, & tackling inequalities locally.

What a fab programme, strengthening communities locally.”
